Or perhaps they see the Sino-Russian alliance as a threat to Japanese security & the defeat of Russia in Ukraine as hurting China's biggest ally.

The current policy of the Japanese government is perhaps the best proof I’ve seen of the argument for more restraint by the US in Asia. Apparently Tokyo feels so secure it can place moral posturing above pushing DC to focus on Asia. Why prioritize Asia if Tokyo acts in this way?

There was a pre-existing Sino-Soviet split that Nixon & Kissinger took advantage of in the 70s. Today, Russia & China are deeply aligned. Trying to use the same strategy for a wildly different situation is foolish.

Maybe look a bit harder at the history before making an analogy.
